Rally Report

Christmas Party at Torksey 6 - 9 December 2018

41 vans arrived at Torksey for our traditional Christmas Party, hosted by the Committee. Despite the rain, the ground remained firm enough to drive over and generally during the day, the weather was mild – very pleasant for the time of year. There was one van from Anglia and one from Nene Valley, all the rest were East Midlanders including John and Joyce Randall joining us for the first time.

The new managers have begun to work wonders on the hall. Not only had the kitchen been completely re-fitted, the hall sparkled with Christmas decorations and lights. It looked a festive picture. Add to that a warming log fire, and the scene was set for a truly jolly celebration of Christmas. Bernadette and Michael were also surprised with a unexpected celebration of their 50 years together. Many thanks to Bill and Dot for supplying enough logs for the entire weekend and to Ron for ensuring it burned merrily throughout every evening! Hot drinks readily on tap, together with our own tipples and nibbles added to our ‘merriment'.

Throughout the rally there were little treats, such as sausage rolls, Bucks Fizz, warm mince pies and of course, the party food on Saturday night. Thank you to Carol and her team of willing helpers and to Champa, Dave and Anne for stepping into the breach on Saturday.

There was a variety of entertainment for us to enjoy, from the ever-present bingo, to Paul’s Christmas quiz and a game of Family Fortunes. Music played a big part in our weekend; carols from Grandad (alias Malcolm), Shon brought along his fair organ which greeted us with carols at the entrance and Maz’s marvellous disco got us all up and dancing. Sadly, this was Maz’s last disco with us. After eleven years of ‘disco-ing’ with us, Maz is giving it up because it is now difficult to organise around his shift work. Anne marked the occasion by giving him a very special mention and thank you.

The now traditional rendering of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” got our competitive natures going – particularly as our junior members (together with a co-conspiring, co-opted older ‘junior’ member) were determined to win with their 5 gold rings. However, they were given a run for their money as Joyce belted out their table’s verse with gusto! Maybe the junior members had a slight edge – but only just! Who knows who’ll win the return match next year…..? The coach visit to Lincoln Christmas Market took place on Friday for all those who wanted the chance to see the market and spend their well-earned cash on Christmas gifts for friends and family – or just to treat themselves!

This report wouldn’t be complete without a mention of our wonderful junior members who entered into the spirit and fun of the weekend. As Anne said in her Chairman’s Chat, the twelve young members, aged from 2 to 14 years old, only meet up at rallies – but friendships have been formed and they all get on famously. No wonder that Santa came along and treated them all to a pre-Christmas gift! Not that they were the only ones! Charley, Bernadette D. and Mick Bowyer also received a little, totally unexpected, treat from Santa for being good! This year Santa was accompanied by Rudolph (alias Lucas), two beautiful fairies, (alias Annabel & Jessica) and three cheeky elves, (alias Pauline, John and Walter). Walter Elf even had enough cheek to demand a pay rise! Thank you to Santa and his team for finding the time to come and see us again at this busy time of year.

All too soon, it was Sunday coffee morning when Anne thanked everyone for making this such a wonderful weekend and Paul and Jane drew the Christmas raffle – not that ‘Paul I never win’ won all the prizes- just quite a few of them!! With two fantastic Christmas rallies over the last two weekends, the East Midlands Group have truly celebrated in style. Happy Christmas everyone!
